Anthony's in Crawford, IN genetically linked to Alsace immigrant Anthony's
My first cousin, James Anthony, supplied DNA (Y-12) and recently received notice that he is 12 marker match to family members that are descended from Peter Anthony, Sr., who came from the Bas Rhin region of the Alsace and settled in the Lehigh Valley prior to the Revolution. Many of his descendants headed west, some settling in the Midwest and the far west.
He has upgraded his sample and we await results, however, the genetic evidence appears to lead us to the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania.
Peter Anthony, Sr. immigrated from Bettwiler, Alsace. He is listed, Peter Anthony (Andoni) on the list for the ship "Two Brothers" from Rotterdam by way of Portsmouth, arriving in Philadelphia on 15 Sept. 1748.
married to Susanna Kuestor 1735 – 1777
and had the following children:
Ludwig Anthony 1750 –
George Anthony 1750 –
John Anthony 1750 –
Phillip Anthony 1750 –
Peter Anthony (Jr.) 1752 – 1818
Catharine Anthony 1759 –
Elizabeth Anthony 1768 –
Peter Anthony, Sr had a second marriage to Marriage to Elizabetha Arner in 1778, the widow of Felix Arner.
The issue is to connect what I know about my Anthony line to the Anthony immigrants from Alsace.
Here is the working theory on my Anthony family:
George (in the family sometimes called William) ANTHONY was probably the brother of Hiram Anthony, John Anthony and Samuel Anthony... whose parents are listed as Samuel Anthony and Mary (LNU).
Samuel Anthony is from Pennsylvania. I have possibly located him on the 1840 Fed Census in Chestnut Hill, Monroe, Pennsylvania, USA. This is very close to Northampton County, PA.
The children/grandchildren of Hiram, George and Samuel intermarried with
Chandley's,
Hardin's and
Grant's in the Crawford County, Indiana/Union County, Kentucky areas. So far my George/William has not been concretely connected with the George who married Mary Caroline Dennis except by proximity and intermarriage of these named families...
George ANTHONY (Parents possible Samuel & Mary {MNU} Anthony) was born in PA abt 1818 and he then appears in Bern, OH married to Mary Caroline DENNIS with the following issue:
Elizabeth (m Alvin Shaw)
Samuel (m Catherine Hardin)
Aaron (m Sarah Winscott)
Jacob (m Margaret Grant)
William (m unknown)
George A. (m unknown)
Rueben (m Isabell LNU)
Hiram, John and Samuel Anthony are also in the Bern, Ohio area and then move to Crawford County, Indiana.
*If* this is my George, he is apparently a widower when he marries:
Sarah (Sallie) CHANDLEY BURIL( b: 1832 in TN) on 22 Feb 1865 in Crawford Co., IN
- something occurs within this family and they divorce (no proof yet) or just split up or he dies, but they are not together again in any record yet found. Her marriage to George Anthony is listed in County: Crawford Source Title 1: Crawford County Indiana Source Title 2: Marriages 1818 - 1880 Books A - D Source Title 3: Part I Grooms Part II Brides Compiled by Ruth M Sl Book: C OS Page: 176
Sarah Chandley Buril Anthony appears in the 1870 Census with her children in the home of her father, James Chandley. Interestingly her children are listed as Chandley's too.
Sarah Chandley Buril Anthony lists herself as a widow on the 1880 Ohio, Crawford County, Indiana Census.
The problem is that the George Anthony that is closest in proximity is listed in the 1860 Patoka, Crawford, Indiana Census and will be a widower by 1861. Ohio & Patoka twps are neighboring. So the timing is perhaps right for them to get together. This George Anthony is also from a family that intermarries with the Grants, Chandleys & Hardins of the area. George or William Anthony also seems to disappear from the Crawford County Federal Census in 1870. The other problem that I have with the George that was married to Mary Caroline is that his youngest children are nowhere to be found with him in the Fed Census, why wouldn't they have gone with him when he remarried? Did the youngest children (Jacob, William, George A, & Reuben) all under the age of ten, go with older siblings?
Sarah/Sallie & George have three children:
Reason Abraham (b: 1865)
Millie Maria (b: abt 1867 - 1912)
James Stewart (b: abt 1868 Crawford Co. IN - d: 13 Oct 1922 - Union Town KY) this is my great grandfather.
He marries Mary Jane MIDKIFF (3 Feb 1890 in Crawford County) and they have the following children:
Rosie M (1890- 1945)
Herman Turner (1892-1918) Spanish Flu
Shelby Roscoe (1898 -1957)
Taylor Orville (1900 - 1918) Horse Accident
Nellie Jane (1904 -1986)
Chester Millard (1908 - 1976) Aneurism/Stroke
Millie (1910 - after 1940 )
Hannah (1912)
James Stewart then marries Julia Ball Cutsinger and they have the following issue:
• Mary Lucile Anthony 1917 – 1918
• James Anthony 1918 – 1918
• Lulu May Anthony 1919 – 1920
• William T Anthony 1921 – 1971
