Sharon: I am David Anglin's brother. The two of us (and to a lesser extent, our other brother and sister) have been working on tracking our ancestors. This has lead us to Marion County, and specifically to the family of Mary Anglin...especially Anderson Anglin, one of her sons. Our great-grandfather William Anglin had told his children that he was born in Kinmundy, IL that his brother Anderson Anglin had become a judge, and that the two of them had served in the Civil War. I just read my brother David's message to you, and wanted to share my interpretation on how Basil Nelson Anglin fits-in. I believe it is exactly as you have shown it on the GenWeb posting. I believe that when the census taker came to the Anglin home in Kinmundy, in 1860, Basil's name was written-down as "Russell" which would have sounded similar, and would have been a more familiar name to the census taker. The age is a perfect match for "Russell" since depending upon what time of the year the census was taken, Basil would have been either 19, or 20. I am confident that your Basil is part of the Kinmundy Anglin family. I also believe that our great-grandfather William was Anderson's (and Basil's)sibling. If William was about 9-10 in 1860, and if he had run-away, he would not show-up on the census data. In addition to telling his children that he was Anderson Anglin's brother, William told them that he had left the family as the "black-sheep" of the family. If he was right about this, he could also have been "purged" from the family record. Who would ever know, one-way, or the other, if that is what happened. Another scenario would be that William was 22-25 years-old (or older) in 1860, and would have been living on his own (possibly under a cloud from the family point-of-view), and certainly not part of the census data. We are seeking 1850 census data, to see what that would reveal. The strange thing is that our great-uncle passed along great-grandfather William Anglin's story in the form of a letter to our dad, in 1968, and it all pointed us back to Anderson Anglin being William's brother, in Kinmundy, Illinois. How would our great-uncle have gotten that information, if his father (William Anglin) had not told him? I believe that Basil and Anderson and ALL the others were our great-grandfather William Anglin's siblings, and that Mary Anglin was his mother. Do you know Mary Anglin's maiden name, or the name and birth-date of her husband? The 1880 census shows that Anderson Anglin's parents were both from Tennessee, and that his mother (Mary) was a widow. Do you know when Mary Anglin's husband (and Basil's father) passed away? Please send a reply if you get this message. Sincerely, Rob Anglin
