Hi Beryl, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. I really have no idea when John was born. I came up with the year 1821 because I have a Death Certificate for a John Angell, Labourer, who died in South Australia in 1904 aged 83 and I feel this is the John Angell I am descended from. Unfortunately, South Australian death certificates from that period have little information of relevance. The other information that I have is that a John Angel aged 26, his wife Mary Angel aged 23 and Henry Angel aged 3 (only one L) arrived in South Australia in 1849 on the "Duke of Wellington", which would make his birth year circa 1823 so at this stage your guess is as good as anybodies. My John and Mary had to have arrived in Australia pre 1853 because they had a son born in SA in 1853. This family who arrived in 1849 may not have been my John and Mary but according to The State Library of South Australia this information came from an Index of Immigrants arriving in Sth Aust 1847-1886. Once they found them listed on a 1849 passenger list, they may not have looked any further. Maybe this is worth further investigation over here. According to the IGI the birth entry for Mary Hawkins says she was born 11 DEC 1824 in Calne, Wilts to Ambrose Hawkins and Mary Edwards. As Mary Edwards was a witness at the marriage of John and Mary does this mean that Mary Edwards and Ambrose were not married and if their daughter Mary Hawkins was born in 1824 and married in 1846 would she have been a minor? She would have been 21 almost 22. What are your thoughts? As a point of interest, according to the Birth certificate of my Great Grandfather Charles, born 1855 his mother Mary Hawkins was unable to sign the register. She had to make her mark. Beryl, I look forward to hearing from you again and please feel free to email me direct. My email address is sakfrag@bigpond.com Regards, Sue.
