There was a family called Browne in Calne and Studley in Wiltshire. One of their number married a Frances Angell from Crowhurst in Surrey.
A couple of generations later the last of the male line of Angells died in 1784 leaving his estates, which were considerable, to the male descendants of this union. One of the conditions of the will was that the inheritors should change their name to Angell. The main guy to inherit was Benedict who then started to style himself Browne-Angell.
