Hi Debbie,

I have details of marriages, baptisms and burials in respect of the Angell family, taken from the records of St. Marys Church, Calne, from 1580 to the early/mid 1800's.

I have record of the baptism of your John Angell Hawkins in 1836 and as you say his father was probably John the son of John and Martha. I have no details of marriage for John and Martha but this might be because they married in Martha's parish. They had six children - William b. 28.9/10.1802, Mary Ann b. 1.4.1805, John b. 28.8.1807, James b. 5.2.1815, Stephen b. 26.11.1817 and Ambrose b. 1820. A Martha died/buried 24.6.1825.

In both the 1841 and 1851 census I have details of John's father and three of his brothers. In the 1851 census there are also details of a John whose age is similar to your John, however, he was married and already had at least one child when your John Angell Hawkins born.

I believe John who married Martha was b. 8.7.1770 and was the son of Sarah Angell, reputed father Samuel Fowler, a Labourer.

Sarah b. 6.10.1754 was probably the daughter of John of Mannins Hill and Mary (Stephens)who married 30.6.1751. They appear to have had two children - Sarah b. 6.10.1754 and John b. 23.10.1757 who probably died 6.11.1757. John (snr) probably died of smallpox 15.4.1760.

Sarah's father John was born 26.11.1726 - his parents were probably John, of Mannins Hill, and Mary (Seager) who married 27.7.1721. They had three children - Seager b. 17.11.1722, Betty b. 3.6.1724 and John b. 26.11.1726.

Although I have earlier information, I am still trying to sort out the family groups and some are proving easier than others.

I had a look at the CD of the 1881 British Census and Index and wondered if your John Angell Hawkins is Head of household at Wraxell Inn, Wraxell, Somerset with his family.

The only other information that might be of interest are two other marriages of Angells and Hawkins -

'William Angell, widower, Labourer of Calne, father Joseph Angell, Labourer, married Rachel Hawkins, spinster, father Ambrose Hawkins, Labourer on 10.2.1844? Wit. Robert and Sarah Hawkins'.

'John Angell, of age, bachelor, Labourer of Calne, father William Angell, Labourer, married Mary Hawkins, spinster, father Ambrose Hawkins of Calne on 21.11.1846. Wit. Chals. Isaac and Mary Edwards'. From this couple there is a line now living in Australia.

Should you want any clarification or further information you are welcome to contact me by e-mail - theangells@btinternet.com

Best wishes - Beryl
