Hi Mary,
I just found your comment on my post. Thanks for answering. Yes, I have seen the written accounts of Eldad Andrus as one of the first settlers in VT as well as the stories about his being captured and put on a British prison ship, about his escape and about finding his lost dog on the way home.
My ancestor ELDAD ANDRUS was born 1822 in OHIO. I know nothing else about his birth, the place/county, or his parents' names. With the 'naming patterns' of the time being what they were, certain names were kept in the family and used over and over in each generation. Eldad is not a very common name and I feel there must be a connection, but I know nothing except my Eldad was born 1822 in OH, probably in the north eastern part of Ohio. It was common for brothers to name their children after their siblings, as well as uncles and grandparents.
I am looking for the Vermont Eldad's siblings, mainly their children, to see if they named a child after their brother Eldad.
I know the men back in those days were fathering children into their 60's in many cases, so there is at least one generation, maybe two, missing between my Eldad in OH and the Rev War ELDAD in Vermont. Each generation seemed to move west and spread out since so much land was available. So, could the VT Eldad be my Eldad's father, grandfather, uncle, or a cousin?
The next thing I know about my Eldad is that he next turns up in Indiana in the early 1850's. He is with a group of other Andrus's presumed to be family. He bought and owned land with a Seth I. or J. Andrus who was born 1818-20, We believe this to be his brother, and there was also a Sarah there with them in IN. Has to be a sister. She married a Thomas Henry in 1842 I think it was,in Ashtabula Co Ohio. He died after they were in Indiana and she remarried to a Jacob Rupel. When she died she was buried in the same plot with Seth & his wife Electa; and older Seth, and Eldad's first (?) wife, Elizabeth Jane Barton. After that Eldad remarried and moved on. So there is one or two missing generations between my Eldad and the Vermont Eldad, and that is what I am trying to find. We believe that Seth, Sarah/Sallie, and Eldad were siblings. I haven't found amy more on earlier history for them except for the info on Sarah and Thomas Henry being married in Ashtabula Co OH before moving on to IN.
Anyone with any info PLEASE contact me or this forum and post a message. THANKS! BJ
