JACOB ANDRESS, b. ca. 1765, lived near Beattystown, Mansfield Twp, Sussex Co., NJ ca. 1800, d. bef. 1830; md. Mrs. WORKMAN ca. 1795. Children: (1) Elizabeth, b. 19 Oct. 1798; (2) Peter W., b. 07 June 1801; (3) Joseph, b. ca. 1803; (4) Hampton, b. 26 Sept. 1807. In searching through records of the Workman family of Colonial New Jersey, trying to find a hint as to the identity of the wife of Jacob Andress, I have run across repeated references to Jan Dircksen Woertman and his wife Anna Maria Andries. She was born in the 1670s. There is a span of about a century between her birth and where my Andress line picks up, but perhaps she may be related to my family. I don’t think Jacob’s wife was a daughter of Peter Workman, but I keep returning to his information. A good source for the Workman family is Thelma C. Anderson’s 1962 book “Workman Family History.” This Peter was born in 1720 and was probably the son of Peter Derick Woertman, and grandson of the 1647 settler from Holland, Dirck Jans Woertman. It was Dirck Jans’ son Jan Dericksen Woertman who married Anna Maria Andries. They were married 17 Jan. 1690 in Brooklyn. Anna Maria would have been Peter’s aunt. Peter lived in Roxbury. During the eighteenth century there were few Workman families living near Roxbury, Beattystown or Hackettstown. He left a will that was proved 28 June 1779. James Skinner was named in the will. Peter’s son, Joseph Workman, married Margaret, daughter of Nicholas Emmons. It was Margaret’s sister, Catherine, who in 1803 married Nathaniel Skinner. (Nathaniel was probably the son of James.) And it was Sarah E. Skinner, the daughter of Nathaniel and Catherine, who married Peter W. Andress in 1825. On pages 372-4 of “Genealogies of New Jersey Families from the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, Volume 2” is a record of some of the descendants of Jeuriaen Andrieszen. He was from Holland and settled in New Amsterdam before 1648. His son Andries Juriaensen was baptized 19 Dec. 1649. He died in Brooklyn between 1680-82. He was married to Annetje Pieterse Praa Bout. Recorded in this article are seven probable children: (1) Anna Maria (who married Jan Dircksen Woertman); (2) Juriaen; (3) Lambert; (4) Jannetje, bap. 26 Jan. 1679; (5) Andries, bap. 03 Oct 1680; (6) Angenietje; and (7) Elizabeth. Juriaen moved to Somerset Co., NJ before 1715. He is included in many of the early records of the county but there are no records of a marriage or children. All indications show that Lambert remained in Brooklyn. He had two known children: (1) Andries, bap. 29 May 1705; and (2) Marytje, bap. 07 Dec. 1707. Andries (the brother of Juriaen and Lambert) moved to Somerset Co., NJ before 1703. He and his wife had seven children: (1) Andries, bap. 25 March 1701; (2) Magdalena, bap. 19 Oct 1703; (3) Mary, bap. 14 April 1706; (4) Jannetje, bap. 04 Aug 1708; (5) an unnamed child, bap. 25 Oct. 1710; (6) Mertien, bap. 17 Oct. 1716; and (7) Priscilla, bap. 17 Oct. 1716. In Colonial Northwest New Jersey there were very few Andress, Andrews, or Anders families. So few, in fact, I wondered how they could not have been related. A Martin Andrews of Greenwich, Sussex Co., died in 1775. He left three sons: Barnet, Jacob, and Christian. Christian died in 1786. Jacob died in 1793. Barnet died 23 March 1830. Most of their children and grandchildren lived in Greenwich or Franklin Townships, some in Oxford and Washington Townships. In the earliest records of these families their names are spelled variously, such as Andress, Andreace, Enders, etc., but by the 1830 census most descendants of the three sons standardized their names to “Andrews.” However, a William Andrews of Franklin Twp. died in 1849 leaving his wife, Margaret, and two young sons: Isaac Martin Andrews and George Sharp Andrews. In 1870 these brothers were living in Blairstown and their name was spelled by the census-taker as “Andress.” It’s tempting to relate these families with a family west of the Delaware River. In October of 1749 Martin Andreas, from Bayern-Pfalz, immigrated to Philadelphia aboard the ship Leslie. He is the only Martin “Andreas” recorded to have immigrated to British Colonial America. He settled in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, married Ann Elizabeth Wotring or Vautrin, and raised a family of five sons and two daughters. Some researchers note that this Martin Andreas is the son of Rudolph Andreas who settled near Emmaus, PA, in the early 1730s. Rudolph is recorded to have had two sons in Mannheim, Germany and one son in Pennsylvania: (1) Johann Martin, b. 18 Aug. 1724; (2) Johann Michael, b. 16 Sept. 1728; (3) Ludwig, b. 29 Sept. 1734. There are no sons recorded born to Ludwig Andreas. Johann Michael raised his family near Easton. Martin’s family lived in Lehigh County and over the next half-century they moved west, with no evidence that any of the family moved into Northwest New Jersey. Many of the same names appear in the descendants of Martin Andreas of Lehigh Co., PA and that of Martin Andrews of Sussex Co., NJ, but I really don’t think they are related. Both Martins are of the same generation and there doesn’t seem to be any connection between them. I do, however, think it’s possible that the Martin of Sussex County is the Mertien who was baptized 17 Oct. 1716. If this were so, then Martin’s aunt would be Anna Maria Andries, the wife of Jan Dircksen Woertman. Martin had a grandson named Jacob by each of his three sons. Barnet’s son Jacob was born in 1790 and would have been too young to father my family or to have been the “Jacob Andres of Mansfield” who died in 1809. Christian’s son Jacob was born in 1776 and he is probably not our Jacob but the 76 year old “Jacob Andrews” living in Franklin Twp. in 1850. Martin’s son Jacob died in 1793. In his will he listed his eight sons probably in the order of their birth. The birth of his fifth son, John, was in 1778; Jacob, the second eldest son, his birth date or baptism not preserved, was probably born in the late 1760s or early 1770s. There is still no proof that any of these Jacobs lived near Beattystown or married a Mrs. Workman. However, Mertien had at least one brother and one male cousin. Either of them may have had a son or grandson named Jacob born between 1755-75; he may be who I’m looking for. Jeremy Andress Andress1776@hotmail.com Notify Administrator about this message?
