First of all, let me apologize for the info in the prevoius response.I tried to respond from memory & confused the Martins with the Brownells. The previous should been as follows:
My ggg grandfather was Claus Andres Sr.
My gg grandfather was Claus Andres.
My g grandmother was Christina (Tina Andres) Brownell who married Burton (Burden)Brownell.
My grandfather was Howard Brownell.
My father is Francis H. Brownell (Dubuque, Ia).
I have the following info, verbatim from my father.I believe it came from page 680 in the book entitled History of Dubuque County, book 977.739):
Claus Andres Sr. born 3-18-1805 in Holstein, Germany. In 1851 he left the old country and was a miller in Harlem, N.Y.In 12-01-1857 he located in Dubuque and until 1864 worked in the Sageville mills. In 1864 he established a mill in Galena, Ill and in 1868 he established a mill in Henry, Ill.He died 03-04-1871 and is buried in Linwood Cemetary (in Dubuque). He was a good neighbor and his loss was mourned generally by all who knew him.
His son, Claus Andres, the immediate subject of this memoir, received his education in the public schools of New York City and early in life learned the cigar making business, which subsequently, from 1865 to 1875, in partnership with his brother Henry, he follow in Dubuque........(more here)....
On May 1, 1866 he was united in marriage with Miss Barbara Kappes, daughter of Alfred Kappes, of Freeport Illinois, and to them were born: August Henry, deceased; Amelia, now teaching in the city schools of Dubuque, and also prominent in Sunday School work; Christina deceased, wife of Burton Brownell, to which two children were born; Mary, teaching in Seattle, Washington schools; Josephine D., teaching in Kickapoo Indian School, Horton, Kansas; and Harriet, instructor in Sherman institute, Riverside, California.Mr. Andres was for years president of the International Gigar Maker's Union, and still is a member of that organization. He is also identified with the G.A.R. Society. In politics he is and always has been an unswerving Republican, and has taken an active part in public affairs.
Henry M. Andres 3-23-1833 came to America in 1851.He came to Dubuque 12-1-1857 and was a cigar maker at 724 Main St.In 1860, May, he married Sophia Beck from Wurtenburg, Germany and they had two sons and 5 daughters.
Looks to me as though my gg grandfather Claus Andres and your gg grandfather Henry Martin are brothers and Claus Sr is both of our ggg grandfather. It looks as though your info doesn't include Claus Jr. as son of Claus Sr. Is that possible??
Thank You,
Ron
