NOTES ON
THOMASINE ANDERTON AND HER FATHER
ROGER ANDERTON OF BICKERSHAW IN ABRAM,
LANCS
Roger Anderton of Bickershaw Gent (Harl MSS 1535) [Chancery Records give him as of the Forde (i.e. of Anderton) others of just Anderton] married Isabel, daughter of Geoffrey Shakerley of Hulme Chester. They had issue two daughters: Thomasine and Elizabeth.
1.Elizabeth Anderton married James Mascy of Grays Inn but died S.P.
2.Thomasine Anderton [born Abt 1567 -IGI - but more than likely earlier say 1562], co-heiress of her father, married first John Singleton of Staining [he died 2nd August 1589]. Son of William Singleton (abt 1530 - 1555/6) of Staining Hall, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancs by Alice Farrington (abt 1525? - 31 Jan 1557 - Will dated. 21 Jan 1557/58;Proved At Richmond), dau of Thomas Farrington of Worden Hall, Lancs and Cecily Radcliffe
John and Thomasine had issue two daughters:
1.Alice (born 1579 - died 10 Nov 1632 and buried Backford, Cheshire 13 Nov 1632) who married [1596?] Henry Birkenhead
2.Elizabeth Singleton (born 1584 -?) who married [abt 1600?] James Massey (born abt 1580?) of Strangewick [Lancs?], but no issue.
Thomasine married secondly, Thomas Dutton of Dutton [1568? (IGI) - died 1614], 3rd son of John Dutton (c1538-1608?) by Eleanor, daughter of Hugh Calverley of Lea, Lancashire; They had issue:
1.John Dutton (born 1595? and according to IGI died 5 Feb 1608/9 [same day as his wedding?] and buried Tarvin Cheshire 11 Feb 1608/9 - IGI) married (Cheshire 9th Feb 1608/9) Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Egerton son and heir of Thomas Egerton, Lord Ellesmere, Lord Chancellor of England, but died S.P.
2.Eleanor Dutton (c1596-c1666), sole heir to her father, married first (16th Sept 1609) Sir Gilbert Gerrard (ob 1622), Knight of the Order of Bath, son and heir of Thomas (1st) Lord Gerrard of Gerrards Bromley, Staffs. They had one son named Dutton Gerrard, born in 1613. Eleanor married secondly (at Dutton 31 Oct 1636) Robert Needham, Viscount Kilmorey (buried Dutton 12th September 1653); they had issue 6 daughters. Eleanor died c1666, her will is dated 20th January 1663/4 and was proved 16th June 1666.
See Will of Viscountess Killmorey (dau of Thomasine) 1664.
1. Dutton Gerrard, 3rd Lord Gerrard (4th March 1612/13 - buried Ashley 22nd April 1640) married (at Bromley abt 1633) first Mary, daughter of Francis Fane, Earl of Westmoreland and secondly (at Bromley abt 1635) Elizabeth (born abt 1615), daughter and co-heir of Henry O’Brien, Earl of Thomond, by Mary Brererton. Dutton and Mary had issue:
1. Charles Gerrard (4th Lord Gerrard) and Elizabeth Gerrard. Elizabeth married William Spencer (1630-1688) of Ashton Hall Lancs, 3rd son of William (1591-1636), 2nd Baron Spencer of Althorp. [Williams’s elder brother Henry was created the Earl of Sunderland in 1643]

Anthony ST JOHN married 29 Sep 1618 at Ashley, Stafford, [between Market Drayton and Newcastle-upon-Tyne] England Thomasine Dutton
NOTES:
Roger Anderton of Bickershaw in Abram, Lancs, was [according to H.I. Anderton] possibly a younger brother of Peter [Piers] Anderton of Anderton (ob 1559). However, Peter [Piers] Anderton was born possibly around 1485, whereas Thomasine, the daughter of Roger Anderton, was born about 1562 [aged say 17 in 1589], a difference of 78 years! It would seem therefore that there is at least a gap of one or at least two generations between Thomasine Anderton and Piers rather than the one H.I. Anderton suggests.
Working backwards the claim of two generations is clearly apparent. Thomasine Anderton was still living 11th January 1627/8; being aged about 66. Her father, Roger, who was married before 1552, may have been aged between 60 and 21 when Thomasine was born giving his year of birth as between 1502 and 1531.
Peter Shakerley, the brother of Isabel for example was born circa 1521.
Isabel Shakerley was born before 1546 [the death of her father] i.e. betw 1521 and 1546.
The probability is that Roger was a son of a younger brother of Piers; his nephew, or even a cousin, with the age difference being so great. The other alternative is perhaps that he was a younger brother but married very late.
