I am related to the Amers of Thatcham-Beenham in Berkshire, England. My g grandfather was Charles Amer, whose father was William Eamer. The Family History Centre lists on the I.G.I. over sixty variations of the name, some of which are Alms, Am Amas Amor, Amore Amour, Amos, Aymes, Eamer, Eames, Eamor Eamore, Eamyens Eaymer, Eeemans and so on including Empson, Ham, Hem, Hemming Imm, Ohelm,, Omish and Oyms.I can give you a full list if you e-mail me.Sometimes the name was spelt up to four different ways in the same family.Perhaps the parish clerks had their own way of spelling what they heard.
