Ammerman-Highfill/Highfield Link?
Another possible link (but maybe just a coincidence) between Highfill/Highfield and Ammerman:1870 census, IN, Vermillion Co., lists Smith Highfill and Peter Amerman as living next door to each other.
314/322 Smith Highfill, 58, W, M, farmer, BP: KY;Margarett, 54, F, W, BP: PA; Malinda, 25, F, W, BP: IN; Robert T., 23, M, W, BP: IN; Elizabeth E., 20, F, W, BP: IN; Malissa A., 15, F, W, BP: IN; Cornelius S., 14, M, W, BP: IN; and Dansie B., 10, M, W, Illinois.
315/323 Peter Amerman, 83, M, W, farmer, BP: NY; Margarett, 65, F, W, KY; Peter Jr., 25, M, W, BP: IN; Ann M. 26, F, W, IN; Nellie H., 3, F, W, IN; and Augusstus W., 1, M, W, IN.
In 1860 census, Smith Highfill was living in IL, Edgar Co., Bruellett's Creek township (Note Dansie's place of birth,
above.)In 1850, Smith was living in IN, Vermillion Co., as was his father, Jeremiah, the brother of Leonard Highfill. They apparently married sisters.Their father was also named Jeremiah Highfill. The latter Jeremiah apparently came to KY from MD shortly before 1790 and lived in various places in KY and southern IN until the 1820's when he moved to Vermillion Co., IN.The 1860 census lists Jeremiah as living with his daughter, Malissa Slater, as 85, M, W, BP: VA.
Smith Highfill was the oldest son of Jeremiah Highfill and Mary Taylor. My ancestor, Thomas Highfill, was their
second son, and married to Mary Jane Hunt. The latter couple, either travelling with or following her kindspersons, moved to AR, Scott Co., in the early 1840's; one of their older sons was named Smith, as well.
