Does anyone have a comment?? Francois Amirault "dit" Tourangeau by most accounts came to Canada as a French soldier. Some proof of this would be the fact that he came to Canada with a "nom de guerre" (war name). It is well documented that he came to Canada on the sailing ship L'Oranger in 1671. Using the date of 1664 for his birth (the date that is posted on most web sites) he would have come over as a French soldier at the ripe old age of seven. It is highly unlikely that this birth date is correct especially since there was no indication of any other relatives on L'Orangers' ship log. This would mean he came to the new world as a French soldier,by himself, at the age of seven. Not a very plausible scenario. The 1686 Census of Acadia reads: "Francois Amirault, 42 years and Marie Pitre 20 years, a little girl named Marie, 2 years". This would indicate that Francois was actually born in 1644. This fits much better given the information we know of him. Admittedly the cencuses of the time were not all that accurate. Proof of this is that the 1693 census has Francois at 38 years of age (this would put the date of Francois' birth at 1655). However, this information would still indicate that Francois was much older than his wife. Other information from both censuses show many women who are married to men 8, 10 even 15 years their senior. For all these reasons and more it is not likely that 1664 was Francois' birthdate. F.
