Hi Amber,

I see that we are researching the same line of Ames'. I am a direct descendant of Charles Ames and Melissa Hart through their son Timothy Putnam. I have found the same information on Charles that you have and that is where I saw the names of his parents as well. I remember one record stating that he was born in Bradford, MA but the rest state VT. I also remember discrepancies in the records on his birth date which is why I have a range of birth year. I think the age stated on his Civil War records made his birthdate more around 1829. Of course there are many reasons for these discrepancies. Also my Mother remembers stories that Charles was from NH.

I have been away from genealogy for many years now and the parents of Charles Ames have been a brick wall for me for more years before that! Did you happen to get the widow's pension records for Melissa Hart? There are signed affidavits from Charles’ children from his first marriage to prove that Charles and Mary didn’t live together as husband and wife because there was no divorce for the first marriage found which would make the second marriage null and void. They are a fascinating read that tell the children’s stories in their own words.

If you haven’t’ found it already there is a lot of vital record information for the Town of Natick, MA (1874 – 1913) where Charles Ames and his family lived.

I look forward to hearing from you soon

Here is the post I made from 1999!

My mother was told that we are descendants of John and William Ames brothers that came to America in the 1600's. As I see here there is much information on the descendants of these two however I cannot find a connection. Any help appreciated

Putnam Ames married Sarah? (These may not be the names of Charles parents). They had at least one son Charles b. 1819-1829 in VT d. 1910 in Natick, MA

Charles first wife was Mary Lois Maynard b. 1829 in MA d. 1896 in NH. They had 4 children two boys born in MA, Mary Alice b. 1855 in VT and Ellen (Helen) b. 1856 in MA

After returning from the Civil War Charles married Melissa Hart b. 1852 in MA. They had 5 children all born in MA:

Timothy Putnam b. 1872
Ada May b. 1873
Charles G. b. 1877
Bessie J. b. 1882
Gertrude b. 1885
