Hi there and many thanks for the reply,

Sorry about the delay in responding - I've taken out a month's subscription with footnote.com and have been going through all the NYC City Directories to see if I could find any more info. Unfortunately this has confused me a bit.

Anyhow what I have for definate is as follows:

1850 NYC Census
Norman Ames (25) - Seaman - born Vermont - married to Mary (born Beechinor, Ireland, 19)
Beechinor family arrived in NYC 17 July 1848 and 1850 census was 30 July 1850 - so marriage sometime between.

1860 NYC Census
Norman Ames (35) - Engineer - born Connecticut - married to Mary, now with 2 children Norman (9), and Hannah Angela (7) both born NY.

1870 NYC Census (1st Enumeration)
James Ames (40) - Clerk in Store - born Ireland with Angela Ames (18) born NY

1870 NYC Census (2nd Enumeration) at 84 Madison Street (home of O'Neil)
Norman Ames (45) - Engineer - born NY - with Mary (40) and Angela (18).

There were 2 enumerations for the 1870 census as the authorities felt that the info given/recorded was not accurate/honest! Who the James Ames listed is I have no idea - at first I thought it was Norman but I feel that this cannot be true and that it was probably a listing error on behalf of the census taker. However all references to Norman are definately the same person.

In 1873 Hannah Angela Ames married my GGGrandfather - James O'Neil and they had one son - also James. They lived at 84 Madison Street (see above). I have no further references to Angela after 1880!

City Directories
As for my City Directory searches I have Norman listed at 98 Monroe Street (Beechinor's address) every year between 1856 and 1864 - nothing before or after! I was hoping to find his approximate arrival in NYC and maybe his death. Given that the 1850 census is my first reference and the 1870 census my last then the Directories have not provided much else beyond that.

Possible connections from the Directories could be the following:
1843-1847 Samuel S. Ames - Engineer at 387 Monroe - dead by 1859 widow Sarah
1851-1854 Cyrus Ames - Shipjoiner 301 3rd Ave and 274 10th Ave - dead by 1859 widow Sarah
I include these speculatively only by association of surname, coccupation and locality.

Given that Norman's birthplace is variously listed as Vermont, Connecticut and then New York, I was wondering if state boundaries changed - a city being in one state in 1850, another in 1860 and another in 1870.

I know this does not give you much to go on as regards Norman's activity pre 1850 - you don't even have known family associates to go on - but it's all I have. I've tried the 1840 census but I would need to know with virtual certainty wher he came from exactly as only head of household is listed - hence my asking about state boundaries.

Many thanks and good luck with the convention.
Michael O'Neil, Liverpool, UK.
