Matilda Barnes, NC?

I continue to have little luck in proving the ancestry of Matilda Barnes, who married Isaac Uriah Amerson/Amason in 1839 in the part of Edgecombe County, NC which would become Wilson County. Benjamin Rogers was the bondsman. (At least two other Barnes women also married Amason men between 1824 and 1833 in Edgecombe County.)

The family lived near Stantonsburg, NC; I have all the relevant census records. (Daughter Susan Amerson married confederate veteran Joseph W. Peacock, had a family, but then died young -- family lore says in a fire -- and the family would move into Elm City, where Joseph was mayor at the turn of the century.) Children of I.U. and Matilda Amason included Charity, Elizabeth, Rufus, Edwin, Thomas, Sarah and Susan.

Unfortunately, Barneses in Edgecombe County and Wilson County are a real rats' nest -- no insult intended! I've been through most of the loose estate papers from both (many many fibredex boxes!) and so far struck out. (Of course, glazed-over eyes don't help!) Amason Association folks (thanks, Sandy!)suggested maybe Matilda was a second wife of a local Barnes, and I.U. Amason was her second husband. Maybe so; I can't find evidence one way or the other. Just too many Barnes options.

Does anyone know of a Matilda Barnes Amason, born about 1814, died probably in 1888? (Unfortunately, the grave site for both of them -- and I believe Susan Peacock as well -- had only heart pine headboards, and has long since disappeared.)

Any ideas appreciated!
