Don't know if you ever found your answer on Jacob Caton's (or Calon) service, but if not, you'll find it now on "Loudoun County in the American Revolution" at http://ketoctin.8m.com/MilitiaOfficers.htmlhttp://ketoctin.8m.com/MilitiaOfficers.html
Apparently his name was given as "Jacob Calon" (or so my notes tell me, but I can double check the original record), and he was indeed commissioned as an ensign -- that fact being recorded in the Militia Officer's list found in the last four pages of Loudoun County's Order Book G, Volume 2. (Note: The Order Books (aka "Minute Books") were the daily record of the quarterly court proceeding. The Militia Officer's list was special enough to warrent a separate listing, the entries being collected from their random scattering in the so-called "Rough Minute Book" which recorded the commission very close to the date when it occured.).
If he owned land in Loudoun County, then you might have a means of tracing his movements through the deeds to see if he was the same person named Jacob Cayton who appeared in Henry County later.
Incidentally, not all the patriots are listed in the DAR or SAR books ... although they do make a good starting point.
