Personal Bodyguard to George Washington

Whether or not his name shows up in the Godfrey book is no proof one way or the other. His information is incomplete, as are the official records of the Commander in Chief's Guard. The original commandant of The Guard collected the records and stored them at, I believe, the Newport naval yard. However, fire destroyed the originals, so Godfrey is working from pension records and other correspondence which touched on Washington's Life Guard. That information is incomplete.
Claims to being a member of Washington's Guard are numerous for a lot of reasons.
#1)In the spring of 1778 at Valley Forge, men were attached to the Commander in Chief's Guard from each regiment in the Continental Army there for purposes of training by Gen. von Steuben. At the end of the training, some were retained in the actual guard, others went back to their regiments as training "officers".
#2)Members of the four light dragoon units, from time to time, were assigned to Gen. Washington as guards, but were not members of his "official" guard, which was a Continental Line Infantry unit.
#3)At the end of the war, the regular guard was furloughed and troops from New England regiments, particularly from the New Hampshire Line, were assigned the last guard duties for The General, his papers, and his baggage train when he returned to Mt. Vernon in 1783.
So, the trail to find members of Washington's Life Guard is rife with detours and boulders.
