Here's what I'd suggest:
1) Look in Virgil White's Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files (3 vols.) There is often information there regarding spouse, children, and even parents.
2) Write the NARA on form NATF 80 requesting copies of your ancestor's complete military and pension records. Sometimes there's info in the documents themselves which didn't get into the books.
3) Look for a book by Roberts, New York in the Revolution (printed 1898 -- probably long since out of print but some major libraries still have copies).
4) Get in touch with NY State Archives to find out more about the unit in question.
5) Look for a publication (usually from the State Society, DAR) which might be titled something like "Roster of Soldiers and Ptriots of the American Revolution Buried in New York" or something similar ... most states have them.... they often contain very good genealogical information, also.
I hope this helps for starters.
