I found this message on the Speer forum and with the details that Joan has provided, it appears that this is also your ancestry.
I found a DAR Patriot in the files for William Dragoo who may very well be your ancestor and can be researched to see if he can be your patriot for your DAR application.
Warm Regards, Jane Curci

Michael Speer (Spear) was my GGGGgrandfather. The info I have states that he was born un Ulster Province, Ireland. So many documents and history accounts have been destroyed in wars and turmoils as with the reign of King Louis XIV in France that turned against the Huguenots which is of the Protestant religion. The King was Catholic so the Huguenots were either slain or had to flee the county. That is why our ancestors went to England and for the same reason King Charles I killed them or ran them out of England and they fled to Ireland. It is unknown when Michael came to the Colonies but it was some time before the Revolutionary War. He settled on the Clinch River, built and operated a ferry at the site where the town of Speers Ferry, Va still exists. He left to fight in the Colonial and Revolutionary War for 7 years and he left his eldest son, Samuel, to operate the ferry. The other children were John, Robert, Andrew, and Jesse. Samuel eventually left the ferry and went with Daniel Boone to Kentucky. I am presently trying to verify Michael's service in the Revolutionary War so that I might become a member of the DAR. So far no luck. I am a descendant of Rebecca Ellen Speer who was the daughter of Silas Speer & *Mary Elizabeth Dragoo*. Silas was the son of *Jesse Speer* b1801 & Sarah Solomon. Jesse was the son of Michael Speer (wife's name unknown. Joan
