Command of Cptn David Patterson in Virginia

My ancestor, William Clarke (1762) was under Captain David Patterson's command in Virginia, specifically they defended the Dinwiddie Courthouse. Later, they viewed the surrender of British Troops at York. I would like to know what regiment this was, and if anyone has records/rolls/musters which might indicate WC's rank. Many, many thanks.
