In Reply to: John Hoffman, Fourth PA militia; 10th PA Continentals(?) by Stefan Fetterhoff of 18095

The obvious avenue would be to find all of the rosters where John or John Nicholas Hoffman appears in the 10th PA Regiment (Continental) and see if the time frame overlaps with either of the two muster roll dates for 1) John Hoffman, 23 Apr 1781, Capt. Martin Weaver's Company; 2) John Nicholas Hoffman, 4 Mar 1776, Capt. Albright Deibler's Company of the 4th Battn. of Associators (both Lancaster Co., PA Militia).

Since all able-bodied free white males aged roughly 16-60 (varies by time and place) were required to be in the militia, available for active duty, and required to report for regular drill (which is when most surviving militia muster rolls were made), any time such a person was not in the standing-army organizations (State Troops or the Continentals) they were subject to militia laws.

Since the name is so common, a name on a roster is not proof that it applies to a given person. You'd have to look at the record copies of the DAR members' applications to see if they proved connections between the two muster rolls and the person they claimed to be the one on those lists (or either list).
