My 4th grt-grandfather Gilbert Evarts was declared a Tory by the State of Vermont for supplying cattle, fodder, etc.,
to Gen. John Burgoyne in Vermont in 1777. All his property was confiscated and he fled to Canada with other relatives.
I joined the DAR through his father John Evarts of Salisbury, CT.! Gilbert's brothers were soldiers, serving CT. during the war. Gilbert thought the colonies to weak in manpower and money to fight the British, so remained loyal to them.
