Help with meaning of a Revolutionary War "Certificate"

Sorry to seem so uninformed, but what does someone mean when they say an ancestor served in the Revolutionary War from New York state amd give as their proof, Certificate # 19456 dated Oct. 19th, 1781? I do nnot know what certificates they are referring to.
Any information on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
