Have you checked to see if a local newspaper might be available, that could contain an obit? It's pretty hit or miss what is availble, but you could get lucky. Obits for his children might also contain the info you're looking for. Their death certificates would also contain parents' names and places of birth, which would be a help.
Have you checked the DAR online site and requested a patriot lookup, to see if anyone joined with James as their vet?
It would be helpful to know why you believe he served....might be a clue there, as to where to be looking.
