Did you not know that you can write to the NARA (on line site gives the 'how to') and request the service and pension records of any vet that served? There is no charge if nothing is found, and a copy of the records is neat to have, if available. Another interesting possibility is to see if any woman had joined the DAR with your ancestor as their vet....and you can order a copy of their filled out form containing the proofs they used....not a copy of the proofs, but what they are....not hard to find when you know what you're looking for. I'm unfamiliar with the SAR, but they probably have something similar.
