York Island was another name for Manhattan Island, New York City being at the southern tip of the island. This is not the same as Long Island. There were several battles fought over Long Island and Manhattan Island in the later months of 1776. Here is a link to a 1781 British map showing Manhattan Island labeled as York Island. The name variance may have been between the British reference and the American reference to the island.

Google; “york island” revolution, and you will get several links to maps, battle information and Google books referring to York Island and Washington’s encampments.
