Bronze Medal - Sons of the Amer. Revolution

I have a bronze medal that was awarded to Zabelle A. Goolian dated 1933 by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. My question is - Zabelle Gollian was a woman who was a teacher in her lifetime. No evidence that she was a member of any organization of military organization. Does the Sons of the American Revolution award medals to women, and if so what would be the circumstance?
