Thanks a lot, Geri. I already had some of this information, having painfully succeeded to trace this line of my family tree. I knew about my ancestor's NY and VT stays, BUT HAD NEVER READ about Peter Mayhew returning to Canada! Any idea about the period and lenghth of stay? This comes as a big surprise to me: would you be able to share with me the source of your information?

Some of Peter Mayhew's children kept in touch with relatives in Quebec, with one even moving back with them (Julienne, Peter's daughter, who I descend from). One grandchild of Peter Mayhew's, a daughter of William Mayhew's, also ended up with relatives in Quebec, got married and settled down.

It is pretty amazing that a Revolutionary soldier from Canada (Quebec) having settled in the US would keep in touch with his relatives in Quebec over three generations!

I have information according to which Peter Mayhew had a wife, the mother of all his children, whose name was Rachel Thompson. The wedding certificate of Peter's daughter (Nov. 26 1811) mentions that the bride was born in Rumney, NH, that her mother is dead and that the father is absent.

The biographies of French-Canadian having take part in the American Revolution mostly remain to be written. Not much have been done in this regard : Canadian history has too often been written in opposition to the US's... Sadly enough. The contribution of French-Canadians to the American Revolution has therefore been largely ignored or tossed aside on this side of the border. Your side was obviously busy enough with its own heritage.

I would be immensely grateful to you if you could let me know where you got your info from. Anymore to be found from there, maybe?

Thanks.

Jean-Pierre
