Irene,

You say "it says he served his country when it was needed."

Er, there is always a question to be answered concerning when markers were installed, and by whom.

Since you saw it personally, you may remember style details well enough to figure out whether it was contemporaneous, 1880s, 1950s or whatever.

There can be so many pesky details when trying to establish some documentary truth.

One of my ancestors has a DAR marker on his gravestone, an old and weathered sandstone marker on which the date of death is now nearly illegible. It is wrong anyway, since it is the year he made his will, not the year the will was probated (the tax assessment rolls establish his date of death more closely). The DAR marker was installed in 1964, and several local officers have tried to establish what the NSDAR-approved basis was for its installation. They could not come up with anything at all. Oh, the man's *name* is on a County Militia roster for the county he came from, along with names of many area free white able-bodied males who were all obligated to turn out for non-active-duty miitia drills / nose-counting. Further than that, I cannot say!

I am trying to sort out another pre-1970s DAR item, where the successful applicants managed to prove how they were related to each other, but evidently did *not* prove their descent from the asserted RW Veteran. Who was a deserter according to his service record, though he sure spun a great tale in his pension applications. Tsk! He seems very likely to be another of my ancestors, and there are little bits of evidence, but proof sure is hard to come by (crucial estate and land records were not, alas, recorded).

With deep sympathy, I wish you good hunting!
