Dear Marilyn,
Maybe the State of Mass. didn't start keeping VR until 1841. Many, many townships recorded them very early.
When the LDS IGI was on microfische, I found they were an index into the Mass. VR. At that point you could tell they were VR because they were listed as b or m some number and not a 'someone says.'
I used to sit on a stool at the DAR library and pull every VR of every town in Mass. looking for my ancestors. Then I discovered the LDS system. I believe they have altered the reference so one can no longer know if the source is a VR. Please someone let me I am wrong.
