First, thank you both for your help in researching my Revolutionary War ancestor.I really appreciate it.
The Dietrich family had way to many kids named John and Elias! After having looked at the DAR Index entry (Dietrich, Elias Ancestor #: A034933) provided by Gayle and the Court and Guardianship proceedings provided by Jade, I believe we are dealing with three different members of the Dietrich family.
The item Gayle found in the DAR Index (Dietrich, Elias Ancestor #: A034933) seems to be closely related to my ancestor, but my immediate impression is that the DAR applicant might have confused two Dietrich brothers with similar names. From my genealogical research, I have concluded there was a Johann Elias Dietrich born in Germany before 1738 and died, probably in Northampton Co., PA, in 1795.I found that he was married to Catherine Long, born 1745.I believe this is the Elias Dietrich named in the DAR Index as married to Magdalena Hart. This Elias was a slightly older brother to my 5x great-grandfather (the one I am researching).
My 5x great-grandfather was twice married; first to Magdalena Hart and second to Anna Margaretha Long. This is the Magdalena Hart that I believe was incorrectly noted by the DAR applicant as being married to the Elias who died in 1795.Catherine Long, noted above, was a sister to Anna Margaretha Long.So we have two Dietrich brothers married to two Long sisters.
The John Dietrich who died in 1794, the one in the Court proceedings who died and left a widow Madgalena and five children, was the son of my 5x great-grandfather and his first wife, Magdalena Hart. The widow Madgalena was Maria Magdelena Schneider (24 Sept 1764 - 8 Apr 1823) and she later married John Datesman.
In his family bible, my 5x great-grandfather wrote the following:"In the year 1778, on the 12 day of April, did I and my son Johan also enlist to go against the English, and as Jacob, my uncle always called me Elias, or young Elias, because I did most strongly resemble my father, and also others did call me Elias, and my son was Johan, therefore did they enlist my name Elias Dietrich and my son Johan Dietrich, and though I did later protest it did so remain."With this statement in mind plus the fact that the names Elias Deitrick and John Deitrick appear on the 14 May 1778 Muster Roll of the Northampton Co. Militia for the 6th Battalion, 2nd Company, (under the command of Colonel Jacob Stroud and Captain Alexander Forseman), I believe these two Militiamen are my 5x great-grandfather and his son, and not Elias 1738-1795 as noted in the DAR Index.
Since my 5x great-grandfather's second wife passed away in 1808 and he in 1809, would he have received a pension? If so, where might I find the pension application files? Is it possible to view the documentation submitted by the DAR applicant for Ancestor # A034933?
Any suggestions as what I should do next?
Lester
