General Rutherford was an Irish immigrant whose parents died on the voyage to America. I suggest you search Thesis and Dissertation databases at a local college, as there have been works published on him. Rutherford became Brig General of the Salisbury District in NC. The Committee of Safety instructed him to raise men to march against the Cherokee in the Fall of 1776. The Cherokee nation was at that time ally to the British. Cherokee warriors were raiding all up and down the southern colonial frontier while colonials were away attempting to repel the British at Sullivan's Island (South Caroilna) in the summer of 1776. The British were not only providing the Cherokee, with guns and ammunition, but there is a plethora of evidence in official correspondance that the British agents had intentions of "using" the Cherokee warriors to aid them in their fight against the rebellious colonies. So, it was easy to see that the colonial militia were motivated to defend their farms, homesteads and settlements, and Rutherford's camapign effectively brought any fighting power of Cherokee to an abrupt halt. Until, that is, Dragging Canoe began his resistance, but that is another story......
