The best place to start is at the National Archives.

If your ancestors served with the Continental army, you may be able to locate pension records (an excellent source of genealogical information) muster rolls and bounty land grants.
Also try to locate and contact libraries and archives in the state, county, and town where you think your ancestors served.If they were in the state or local militia (instead of the Continental army), the NARA probably won't have any record of their service, but local sources might.
