I believe you are right about Fort Pitt being a mistake.
Joshua Shelby enlisted as a private in the Va. militia at "Fort Liberty" in Sept. 1776 under the command of Capt. Thomas Gaddis serving there 61 days. The NARA has a roll you can rent for $3.50 (30 days) through your local library. It is a list of men in the Company of Capt. Thomas Gaddis Va. Militia. It is M881 Roll 1089. Joshua may be on that roll of micro.
This Joshua in 1781 was living at the Mouth of Brown's Run, German Twp. Fayette Co. Pa. Later he was in Mason Co. Ky. and in 1818 moved to Wayne Co. Ind..(later known as Union Co.) where he died Sept. 10, 1830.
Is this the right Joshua.
