Marjorie,
You can get the record from NARA.Follow the instructions below to get the request forms.
Go to:www.nara.gov
At bottom left, click on Site Index
Next screen, click on Genealogy Research
Nextscreen, click on Forms to order Records
Nextscreen, click NATF 85 for Pension Records request
And/or, click NATF 86 for Military Service Records request
Next screen, check next to any forms you wish,
click quantity button for number of each form you want
Below the forms order block, click“provide your contact information”
Fill out contact information
Click Review Your Entries
If all correct, Click:Submit Form
When you get the form(s) fill out all the info you can.NARA will inform you when they have the package(s).If you provide credit card info on the form(s) they will charge the card and send the packages immediately. There is no charge if they can’t find records.
Note,The pension records, if your troop got one, are the most informative for genealogy purposes. The service records show mostly where he was at various times during the war and what he was paid from time to time.
You can check Ancestry.com to check on the existance of records. If you don't let me know all you have on him, most useful is the state from which he served. That will assist in sorting him from all the other James Taylor's who served.
Good hunting,Phil
