My husband's family has an Amato - Mirasola marriage in Agrigento province, Sicily. Providenza Mirasola, born 12 Apr 1883 in Aragona, Agrigento, Sicily, married Emanuele Amato (Jr.) in Aragona on 27 Sep 1903. He was born 5 June 1875 in Favara, which was a few miles away from Aragona. This was a second marriage for him, after first wife, Maddalina Fanara, died in the U.S. around 1903, leaving one child (Giuseppe, or Joseph, born 15 Jan 1903). Providenza was known as Prudence in the U.S. She and Emanuele died in Raleigh Co., WV. His occupation had been miner in both countries.
Emanuele Amato Jr. was the son of Emanuele Amato Sr., a surfer miner, and Antonia Aucello. There was one known older child, Pasquale, born 6 Jan 1872 in Favara; died 17 Dec 1875 in Favara). We do not know where this Amato family was from before Favara; apparently, they had only 2 children in this town, according to a researcher whom I hired around 1991. They moved to Aragona, where the following children were born: Madalena, 12 Dec 1904; Antonia or Antoinette, 31 Aug 1907; Rosaria, 24 Dec 1910; Salvatore, 04 Apr 1913, died as an infant; Emanuele, twin to Salvatore. After emigration to America, they had the following children in WV: Salvatore (II) "Sam," 09 Dec 1914; Theresa, 1916; and Cologero, 1921.
The parents of Providenza (Mirasola) Amato were Salvatore Mirasola, born 21 Mar 1852 in Aragona, and Rosaria Moscato, born 14 Aug 1852, Aragona; married in Aragona 8 Feb 1874. Other known children of this couple were Paolo, born 2 Apr 1876; Rosario, 13 Jun 1886; Maria, 21 Mar 1895. There is said to be an additional child, Giuseppe, about whom I have no further information.
