Though my family branch added an "s" onto the name back before 1850, there should be no real difference between Amanns and Amann.

Throughout all my life (such as at school and filling out forms, etc.) most tried to pronounce it with a long "A" as in A'MANN, or as the capitalized part of: "i am A MAN".

On the other hand, my family always pronounces it with a soft "A" as in AM'ANN, or as the capitalized part of: "i AM a MAN".

I have heard that the German pronunciation sounded like Ah'man. (Like the doctor said, say "ah"!) At least all I have encountered agreed that the first syllable was accented. Perhaps others here may pronouce it differently.
