Jenny, There were two distinct family migrations to Melbourne, Australia in the 19th century. One lot came from Gloucestershire in the 1850's and my lot in the 1880's from Bristol. Both branches co-exist today in Melbourne and are breeding thankfully. At one stage in the mid 1940s and 50s we were getting quite thin on the ground and in danger of extinction(at least the Bristol lot were). I have a complete family history back to the 1600's for the Bristol branch, who came originally from Gloucester as tenant farmers, then as merchants in Bristol, followed by manufacturing wire and steel ropes in the 1860's to the 1940's when the Nazis blew up the wire works. The bomb crater still exists next to what is left of the Bristol Wireworks. Alas the back taxes are worth more than the hole in the ground. Cousin David Alway from the UK is a great corrospondent and if you are interested I can give you his contact.
I hope that helps you a little.
Kind regards,
John Alway.
