Hello Helen,
I was very excited to come across your posting. Samuel Elves (Manuel Alves) was my 3Gs Grandfather (married Christiana Hugill) and I too have been trying to trace his roots back to Portugal - albeit with no success so far unfortunately. I have found UK Census information for him and his family in Durham though, which I can share with you if you don't have this already. I will follow up with more information that I have.
