Wow - it is intriguing to stumble apon this message board! As a given name you can find many variations of Alva in several language branches. The earliest that I can trace it to is Aramaic (pronouced as if spelled Alvie or Alvy) The female spelling is Elva. The meaning of the name is: The first light that lights the sky of a brand new day (hence the later translations of "white" and "pure")it is also the middle name(thank you Carol Burnett)of the early talk show host Dick Cavett.
