Adam and Hannah Searfoss Altman of Hancock County, Ohio had 12 children. Two of their daughters married Edwards men in Pickaway County, Ohio before moving to Hancock County between 1832 and 1842. Adam and Hannah also had a niece (Mary Altman b. 1815) who was the daughter of John George Altman Sr. She also married an Edwards man. There is confusion as to which Mary was the wife of Samuel E. Edwards. 1. Maria "Polly" Altman b. Abt. 6 Aug 1804, was a daughter of Adam and Hannah. She married Edward Edwards 21 Aug 1826, in Pickaway County, Ohio. This Edward Edwards was a brother of Samuel E. Edwards, the great Ohio Hunter. Edward and Maria "Polly" evidently lived in Hancock Co for a short while, then moved on to Henry County along with Samuel Edwards and brother John Edwards around 1850. Samuel's wife Mary (cousin to the other women) died in 1848 and Samuel began hunting in Henry County after her death. Polly and Edward Edwards' genealogical trail drops off in Henry County around 1855 when Edward is no longer listed in the tax lists. [Another Edward Edwards is listed a few years later in the tax lists, but this is not Samuel's brother, as he is much younger - 27 years old on the 1870 census]. Adam's Will states that he gave each of his daughters land in lieu of leaving them something after his death. And the Edward Edwards land transfer is recorded in book 4, page 531, Hancock County. It was executed in the presence of Samuel E. Edwards. Adam Sr. also gave lands to James Burnip (daughter Catherine's husband -Book 4 page 347); John Edwards (daughter Elizabeth's husband -Book 5 page 231); John D. Powell (daughter Susanna's husband -Book 5 page 311); along with his sons. Daughter Hannah Moore was given money instead of land according to the Will. 2. Elizabeth Altman b. Abt. 1806 married John Edwards in Pickaway County, Ohio on 3 May 1825. He shows up on the Pickaway County 1830 census. John Edwards is mentioned in Samuel Edwards' book The Ohio Hunter as Samuel's brother. Adam Altman gave him land (Book 5, page 231 Hancock County). He and Elizabeth later show up in the Henry County, Harrison Township census in 1860. 3. Mary Altman b. 1815 is the wife of Samuel E. Edwards. She married Samuel 18 Sep 1832 in Pickaway County, Ohio. She is the daughter of John George Altman b. 1794. Her brother was John G. Altman b. 1818 who was the father of Andrew Altman. Andrew Altman was the fellow who wrote all those fascinating Civil War letters home to his family. John G. Altman also lived for a while in Hancock County, then also moved on to Henry County. This solves the mystery of the Mary Altmans. Maria "Polly" Altman and Mary Altman were two different women. Adam Altman's daughter Maria "Polly" Altman was not the wife of Samuel E. Edwards, but she was a sister-in-law. Notify Administrator about this message?
