Mary Althoff - Port of NY to Dayton OH ca. 1916

I THOUGHT I posted this message - but it didn't show, so try again - apologies if there's an eventual double posting.

This is a brand-new riddle, perhaps you can help?

Mary ALTHOFF was adopted by my Great - Grandmother's sister Mary/Marie SUTTER. The elder Mary had no husband, and raised the younger Mary by herself. "She went to New York to get her."

Marie SUTTER was born in 1846 in Kogenheim, Alsace-Lorraine. We don't know where the younger Mary ALTHOFF was born or her birthdate. But she was of the same generation as my mother, who was born in 1916. This SUTTER-ALTHOFF pairing lived in Old North Dayton - where many German immigrants had settled.
