Robert Alsup, Sr., 84, was born September 13, 1924, and
passed on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Lonesome Pine Hospital
in Big Stone Gap, VA.
The fourth in a family of eight children, Robert was born
to John Richard and Rosa Lee Stewart Alsup in Monarch, VA.
He attended school at Monarch and Pennington High School.
He enlisted in the United Stares Army just prior to the
attack on Pearl Harbor and was a combat veteran with the
4th. infantry Division in the European theatre during
World War ll. Robert trained in England and went into
France, Belgium and Germany. While stationed in London
during 1943 Robert met and married the love of his life,
Amelia 'Millie' English Alsup. After the war they settled
in Pennington Gap to raise their family.
Robert worked as a coal miner and later as a guard for the
State Road Force. In the nineteen-seventies he worked as a
campus security officer at Bluefield State College in
Bluefield, WVA, and then Clinch Valley College (now the
University of Virginias College at Wise). He retired from
CVC in 1992. Robert was of the Catholic faith and a member
of the St. Pius X (now Holy Spirit) Catholic community.
His life centered around his family and a love for the
outdoors. He was a farmer at heart and loved tending to
the horses, goats and cattle he raised throughout the years.
Along with his parents and his wife, Amelia, Robert was
preceded in death by daughters, Maria and Julia Catherine
Alsup; stepson, Alan English; grandson, Robert Alsup lll;
brothers, Curtis Alsup, Dick Alsup, and Tucker Alsup; and
sisters, Blanche Bradshaw and Mae Anderson.
He is survived by his children, Robert Jr. and wife,
Dorothy Alsup of Somerset, KY, Dennis and wife Jean Alsup
of Pennington Gap, VA, Linda Kay Alsup of Pennington Gap,
VA; grandchildren, Jason Alsup, Catherine Alsup Eagle,
Dennis Alsup ll, Matthew Alsup, Heather Alsup Morton,
Andrew Alsup, Joshua Alsup, Stacey English and Jason
English; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marie and husband
Garland Carr of Orlando, FL, Mary and husband, James
Allington of Knoxville, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family welcomes friends to share in the celebration of
Roberts life from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2009,
at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap. Father Tim
Drake and Father Les Schmidt will offer a Mass of the
Resurrection on Wednesday afternoon, June 10, 2009, at
1 p.m., at the funeral home chapel.
Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway.
Province Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
the University of Virginias College at Wise.
