Hi Rebecca, Before I get into my newest Alston story, I want to tell you that the name Lysle is well known in Pittsburgh and information can be found about that family in the on-line data base of the University of Pittsburgh at http://www.library.pitt.edu/ Once in the site select Historical Pittsburgh and on the pop-down click on Full Text Selections and do a simple search. Have fun, for if your George Lysle is the one who owned George Lysle and Sons, you will be reading for a couple of hours. In addition, more information is at the Senator John Heinz History Center at http://www.pghhistory.org/ A George H. Lysle is listed as being the mayor on McKeesport in the Heinz data base. Once you get into it, select the Library and Archives area and click on Overview, then Search Library Catalog, then Digital Research Library. If you want additional information about these data bases please email me directly at sshanna@earthlink.net. As to the Alstons; I have learned some information about my Alstons since my first posting. Of importance is the knowledge that they were not Irish immigrates. Their father was Scottish, still have not tied in the name Blackford. 1. Mary E. (Alston) Hanna appears in the 1910 census of Pittsburgh, age 57, living with her daughter Belle age 30; 2. In the 1920 census Mary E. (Alston) Hanna and her daughter, Belle, are living at Maple Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, part of Tract 3-1, City of Pittsburgh, and Ward 26. They are listed with Mary's sister, Agnes G. (Alston) Owens and her daughter, Wilma. Agnes is listed as head of household, age 69, born in Pennsylvania, widow, not employed, renting, father born in Scotland, speaking Scotch, mother born in Pennsylvania. Listed with daughter, Wilma age 35, born Pennsylvania, single, both parents born in Pennsylvania, employed as teacher in public school system; sister Mary Hanna age 67, born Pennsylvania, widow, not employed; Belle, age 41, born Pennsylvania, father born in Ireland, speaking Irish, single, employed as teacher in public school system. Now, that information is significantly different from that which I originally had; which had been recorded upon a scrap of paper by my mother. I have the social security number of both Belle and Wilma, so I am going after their death certificates and original filing for social security; hope there is more specific information available.
