I have recently managed to obtain further confirmation by requesting a copy of Israel Alston's Birth Certificate from the GRO when I last visited the FRC in London. It shows that Israel was born on 11 October 1847 at Fobbing. His mother's maiden name is given as Ann Ashman, so my Shuttleworth information is clearly wrong. James' occupation is also given as Labourer. Charlotte's birth was registered in March 1840 in Orsett District, which fits with your date for her baptism.

I also found details of the family in the 1861 Census Records for Fobbing, as follows:
James ALSTON 50 Nottingham General Dealer, Ann ALSTON 45 Rayleigh (the children were all born in Fobbing)
Jane ALSTON 17, John ALSTON 15, Joseph ALSTON 10 (or12?), Mary ALSTON 10, Martha ALSTON 3, Israel ALSTON 13
Also Ann ALSTON 6 born in Fobbing was a Niece staying with them.

If James was born in Nottingham, it explains why you have not been able to track him down in Essex! I couldn't read Joseph's age very well on thje census microfilm: it could have been either 10 or 12, so I want to look up his Birth Certificate in the Indexes to see if he and Mary were twins, as my father was also a twin. It is interesting that another Ann is shown as a niece, as it suggests that James had a brother somewhere.

Just to make certain I also looked them up in the 1851 Census a few days ago. The details are as follows (with another son that I was previously unaware of, as well as confirmation that Joseph and Mary were twins, although I have not yet been able to find any record of their Birth Certificates).
James ALSTON 41 Nottingham Farm Labourer [Surname was recorded as "Holston"], Ann ALSTON 35 Rayleigh,
James ALSTON 14, Charlotte 11, Abraham 9 Farm labourer (?), Jane 7, John William 5, Israel 3, Joseph 1, Mary 1.
I am also interested in the BRAND family: John BRAND married Elizabeth Mary Alston, a daughter of James Ashman, who was one of my gt-gt-grandparents.
