Allan, Regarding the Quaker records, since the Clarks were among the first Quaker families settling in NC; I attended a workshop at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC., spring of 2000. The Friends Historical Collection was the topic of the seminar. I asked the archivist this question concerning marriages out of unity with the Quaker Faith. "If Mary Clark, a devout Quaker, would have married John Alston of Chowan,an Anglican, why was this marriage not recorded in the Quaker records." The reply was, If this marriage would have occurred, she would have been "dismissed for marrying out of unity with her faith." Quakers had to apply for permission to marry. Once permission was granted the marriage could take place. Since the records for this period are considered complete, the records would exist. Mary Clark would have been "disowned" if she would have married without perrmission and such an extreme measure would have caused quite a "ruckus" in such a small community. No records exit of this marriage.
The letter from Judge Palin that was mentioned says "Mary Alston" wife of John Alston, we knew her name was Mary from the will of John Alston, no maiden name was mentioned in the letter.
