Alston Family Genealogy Forum

For quite a few years now, I have been attempting to collect and "tree" as many of my numerous Allston/Alston ancestors as possible, but I seem to keep hitting loose ends. So far I have determined that Alstons came to America from both England and Scotland, but were not related other than a shared surname (mine came from England). Making matters even more complicated is the fact that JOHN was used as a common first name by Alstons of both countries; most arrived in the late 1600's or early 1700's; and the Carolinas were the destination of choice at that time. I'm of the opinion that there were actually at least three John Alstons who arrived in the Carolinas within a short time span of each other - two cousins from England and an unrelated one from Scotland (by way of Barbados - either by choice or by government edict) - and the similarity of names has led to confusion ever since. Many of the Alstons I can't connect founded or resided in Scottish place name inspired plantations and places, so it's only logical to assume they had some connection with Scotland rather than England.
If you can shed some light on when and where your earliest Alston ancestor arrived in America, especially if he was named John and/or arrived via the West Indies or Barbados, I would be most appreciate of hearing from you. Please contact me at jalston@toast.net , and if you would, please be kind enough to send a courtesy copy to Susan at susanp@st.net.au. We would both be grateful, and I will respond to all.
