Your first informant mentioned the Alston book. That is your best bet. I, too, am descended from Solomon and Ann Alston. The book was researched by professionals, I understand and seems to be well documented. As I understand it one of the two who came over as very young with a governor adopted the spelling of "Allston" while the other retained the "Alston" spelling. Look in the LDS Lib. for microfiche relating to Alston and its origins. It was the ancestral home of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Much info on that area. There are films on the Alstons in the LDS Lib. also.
