Robert Allyn b. 1608 d. 1683 m. Sarah _____ Robert r. Salem, 1637, enrolled as a member of the church 15 May 1642, moved to New London in 1651 & obtained tract on east side of Thames River in town of Ledyard; styled self as "of New Norridge" in 1681; Constable, 1669; returned to New London & died on his farm there at Allyn's Point. He is probably the son of George Allyn who was a cod fisherman off Newfoundland. Robert was 29 when he settled in Salem in 1637. He moved to Connecticut with the Cape Ann Company and must have brought money with him as he was among those purchasing lots on Cape Ann Lane as well as a large grant up the river at Allyn's Point. In '56 he began trading from there in his own vessel. [A Matthew Allyn, baptised 17 April 1605 in Braunton, Devonshire, emigrated to America and died 01 Feb 1671 at Windsor, Conn., apparently son of Richard Allyn and Margaret Wyatt. See Frank Thistlethwaite's "Dorset Pilgrims" (London: Barrie & Jenkins, 1989).] . * Sarah Allyn b. 22-May-1642 m. 17-Feb-1659 George Geer b. ca. 1621 d. 1726 George: See "The Geer Family," by Walter Geer (N.Y.: Brentanos, 1923); "Devonshire Families," by Thomas Westcote (Exeter, Eng.: 1845, p. 565); "The Visitation of Devon", Publications of the Harleian Society, Vol. 6 (1872), p. 126. George r. Groton and then Preston, Conn. His ancestry is given in the above references. His will dated 05-Jun-23 was entered for probate 10-Jan-1726/7 at New London, Conn.; it is witnessed by Thomas Clark and Stephen Gates and names his children [will reprinted in Geer Family Association Newsletter, Summer, 1991, p. 34]. George arrived at Boston, MA in 1635 with his brother, Thomas (b. in 1623) and they likely r. Salem or Boston for several years. He probably moved to New London will Robert Allyn, whose daughter he married there. He purchased Robert Isbell's farm, in the northeast part of the present town of Ledyard, next to the Peter Spicer farm; the township of New Londan included this area then. At the first town meeting (Dec., 1705) George was chosen townsman for the new town of Groton. He moved from Groton to r. with his daughter Margaret Gates in his last years. He was interred in an old Indian burial ground in the present town of Griswold, about two miles from his daughter's farm where he died. He was blind in his last years.
