Greetings Miranda,
Your Samuel Allison could be the son of Jonathan Jackson Allison. A Samuel Allison is mentioned in the 'History of the Pan-Handle...' as being the son of J. J. Allison. Your Samuel Allison can be found by following the 1800 census. A handwritten marriage 'confirmation' in the Brooke County Marriage Register by Minister George Scott has Samuel and Fanny Pugh being married 14 Feb 1830, but no dates of birth or parents are mentioned. Samuel is not mentioned in the Hancock County Sheriff's summons for the reading of J.J. Allison's Will nor is he mentioned in J.J.'s Will. Either his son Samuel is deceased or lived too far away to be summoned. So, I am still researching to try to find another source to list a connection.
On the more positive specualtions to your Samuel being a son of Jonathan Jackson Allison is that Samuel's 1870 census does mention his father being born in Maryland, which J.J. was. Also, George Scott was the minister that lived in Fairview/Pughtown/New Manchester and his church was located at Flats Cemetery, which back then, Flats Cemetery was the church cemetery. This was the church that the Allison's attended back in the day, along with Asbury Chapel, which popped up later and close by. Also, back then, Hancock County WV was nonexistent and was Brooke County VA. I have a hunch that Samuel left and went to the Wheeling area for a time, found passage down the Ohio River and ended up in Missouri. Jonathan Jackson Allison died in 1872, which at that time your Samuel was living in Missouri and was indeed too far to travel back for a summons for reading of a Will in Hancock Co., WV. Since your Samuel already had land and did not need 'inheritance' from J.J. he was not mentioned in the Will. Another positive speculation is that your Moses Allison was probably named after Moses Pugh who married Christina Allison, a daughter of Jonathan Jackson Allison and sister to a brother named Samuel.
What would be nice to find is a mention of any siblings of Samuels or a mention of Samuel from the siblings. I hope this helps you out and good luck in your research.---George Allison
